What makes a great page-turner?
We’re really enjoying this month’s literature theme and hope you are too. Last week, we focused on reading in another language. While it can be an immensely rewarding experience, there are of course challenges involved, which we explored in the last poll. The results were a mixed bag.
Todas las opciones obtuvieron votos. Es decir, cada una representa el mayor desafío para alguno de los participantes: dificultades para comprender la trama, una experiencia menos placentera o un ritmo más lento, aunque la mayoría identificó el vocabulario desconocido como la parte más difícil. Si bien el peso de estos factores varía de una persona a otra, en conjunto, nos dan una idea de por qué leer en otro idioma puede ser una experiencia tan diferente de la de leer en nuestra lengua materna.
In last week’s coffee chat, we delved further into the reading experience in your second language. One person mentioned that they tended to forget they were reading in another language after a while, whereas another found the experience to be more difficult, like the poll results showed. We also touched on graded readers (books that are adapted to different language levels). Although they were acknowledged as being useful, one attendee pointed out they aren’t always readily available for certain types of texts and that there is sometimes no choice but to read certain information in another language. Original, authentic texts were also thought to be more appealing, in terms of feeling challenged and the sense of accomplishment being bigger.
